On the 28th of May 2022, I went along with a non-profit I volunteer for called TEAK Foundations for a charity event at Bariga(Lagos) to celebrate Children's day with the children in the area.
Of what use is feeding them just once and for them to be hungry tomorrow "I often thought".
It feels like a waste of time. It feels like they are not being helped. I often thought that they should be empowered if they are adults so they can begin to feed themselves and for children, it would be better if a farm or food bank can be created as this would be quite sustainable.
Looking at it from this angle would make you agree with me that charity events are not sustainable but does it make them unnecessary?
No, it is still very important and valid. As a non-profit, we might not be able to scrap the daily hunger but we were able to leave them with an unforgettable experience for just that day, we were able to make them not hungry for just that one moment.
All it takes for a life to be changed is just one moment, one experience, one encounter.
The real deal here is that what we do matters and we can be part of the change in the world. The vision is quite big but we are taking a step one after the other to improve the lives of the less privileged.
Charity events might not be sustainable but are not useless. That is why non-profits need all the support they can get to improve lives. The government cannot be everywhere and they can't do everything.
We can't keep on complaining about our hands crossed. They are also humans like you. Then, what are you doing in the space you are occupying? You don't always have to start your own thing, you can join existing ones to play your part faithfully.
You need to see the survival of the fittest at just we sharing the food, it was like " is it not just rice, rice that they can eat at home". I tell you, it's a privilege to have a home where you can get most of the things you want even if it's not everything.
It takes one to be determined to rise to her responsibilities as a human. It's a matter of priority.
Does this matter to you? How are you stepping up today?
Cheers to your happiness.
Yours truly,
Faith.
Whao.....whao!

DeleteWell done Faith. Thank you for putting this out!
ReplyDeleteIt's a pleasure🥰
DeleteFaith, you have done a good thing here explaining how a day can make a big difference in the lives of these children.
ReplyDeleteMany not-for-profit organisations do aim their programs at getting grants and funding from beneficiaries, hence, the desperation that exposes these people to camera lenses.
How about we finetune the talents of these young ones and not just feed them for one day? Faith, if you look at the sustainability of the SDGs, a one-day event will not bring the desired change. Isn't.
Continuous efforts to make these children discover their potential(s) will make the world a better place.
Cheers.
Well done, Faith A. O.
